Worklog and Other Updates from September

Whew! Just mailed in scripts of INDIA AUTHENTIC #7:YAMA, SADHU: THE SILENT ONES #3 and DEVI #15 (The arc finale).

Like the way SADHU:TSO #3 shaped up, most existential piece I’ve ever written (mostly deals with nature of reality, dreams as an expression of an ultimate reality and touches on the concept of the collective unconscious expressed via Dreamtime).

DEVI #15 wraps up the Karmageddon arc and all I can say is that (Russel Peters don’t sue me) “SOMEBODY GONNA GET A HURT”. As my editor Ron Marz puts it we’ve “amped up” the action to the Nth as Tara Mehta, the girl who became a goddess finally snaps under the straing of carrying a divine essence inside her mind and a much darker entity is spawned. BTW… look out for DEVI #14 later this month.

INDIA AUTHENTIC #7 that i just sent in tells the story of YAMA – the god of death. It was a kicker to write for Yama is one the cooler deities around what with him being the guide of every soul into afterlife. :D

THIS MONTH ON STANDS

INDIA AUTHENTIC #5 – SHIVA
DEVI #14
SADHU SILENT ONES #2

All of them hit the stands within the next couple of weeks or so. So go buy my stuff… me hungee and now i got to think of a baby girl to feed by FEB (yeah! we got official word from the doc that it’s a girl)… :D

ComicCritique.com gives INDIA AUTHENTIC 5 out of 5 stars :D

ComicCritique.com in a recent review has given the INDIA AUTHENTIC series 5 out of 5 stars. You can read the review here.

Excerpted from the review

True mythic wonder to surpass any mortal special effects is packed into the one-issue stories of the recently-started India Authentic series. These spotlight one deity per issue in a kind of Secret Origins for the living spirits of Hinduism, aspiring to give readers the straight story of forces and personas that are elaborated on for modern fictional purposes in many of Virgins other books. Though this ones a kind of primer on a religious belief, the lore of India is readymade for the sword-and-sorcery sensibility, and the atmospheric, mystical art well conveys otherworldly figures in dreamlike landscapes. The biggest surprise is the way the tales are personalized, usually through narration by witnesses whose identity or role remains a surprise until the end and puts a poignant human-interest spin on the clashes of titans the books mostly concern. Its a big pantheon, so India Authentic has as promising a future as it has a rich mythic history to draw on.

Well that’s the good news :D but the bad news is the reviewer does not like the way DEVI #11 and #12 have shaped up a lot though. Them’s the breaks.

INDIA AUTHENTIC response

Over at the CBGXtra forums INDIA AUTHENTIC has been making “Matt’s Picks” every issue. This is what Matt Levin (Walking Man comics) has to say about the series in his latest post.

India Authentic is a one-issue biography of a Hindu (please correct me if this’s wrong–!) deity; each’s been sumptuously drawn, and, remarkably well-written given the brevity of a one-issue story. I am hoping to see a one issue story that brings all the characters presented so far, to interact together.
If that happens, this will become far more than the attractive, well-written, one-issue bio-mag it is with four issues.

Leah Moore (Albion, Wild Girls) has this to say about INDIA AUTHENTIC

INDIA AUTHENTIC #3 INDRA released

INDIA AUTHENTIC #3 / INDRA is out on the stands today. This tells the story of INDRA, the king of the Gods and his battle with Virithra, the serpent demon who is holding the waters of the earth hostage.

It is drawn by Satish Tayade.

Here is the solicit text

‘I am INDRA, the son of Dyaus. I am THUNDER! I am the King of Gods! Those that have stood before me have either become friends or have been crushed by my Vajra. Like Virithra, the serpent demon that held the waters of a young world hostage, and who could not be killed by any metal, or wood, or stone. I decimated him with my Vajra, crafted from the bones of the sage Dadhichi. I am the ruler of Svarga (Heaven,) master of the nubile Apsaras (nymphs,) the lord of Soma (The sweet wine of Ambrosia,) and the tamer of Airavaat, the four tusked elephant of lore. I invite you to come see for yourself the might of Indra and the splendor of Amarvati Prime, the city of Gods.’ “

INDIA AUTHENTIC in Phillipines

Martin Perez a social studies teacher from Phillipines is using INDIA AUTHENTIC as prizes for his students. I had the good fortune of interacting with Martin on Comic Bloc forums and then via mohaps.com.

Thanks Martin. Things like this make writing comics all worthwhile. Wish you and your students all the best in your efforts.

The goal of a series like INDIA AUTHENTIC is to bring these stories to the world and I believe efforts like this compliment the objective soundly.

If you know of any such event and news item w.r.t. INDIA AUTHENTIC / VIRGIN COMICS titles, please do drop me a line or comment on this post. I’d be delighted to hear of such stuff.

Virgin Comics Mines Indian MythsVirgin Comics announced today that they are launching a new ongoing graphic novel series with bestselling author, Deepak Chopra.

The new series, Deepak Chopra Presents – India Authentic, will focus on retelling numerous Indian mythological stories with modern artists and writers. Each issue will be centered on the story of a different Indian god or goddess. The first issue, Ganesha, portrays the legend of Indias cherished, elephant-headed god. The series will continue with subsequent stories on Kali, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Uma, Indra and others.

Commenting on the new series, Deepak Chopra stated, “The re-imagination of Indian mythologies and archetypes with a cross cultural flavor will ignite once again our collective yearning for achieving the impossible and embarking on a journey of mystery, magic, and adventure. It may well usher in an age that Homer never dreamed of.”

Each issue of the series will be introduced with a foreword by Chopra, describing the relevancy of the ancient myth in the context of todays global world. Working with Chopra is a rotating team of Indias most talented young writers and artists including Saurav Mohapatra, Satish Tayade, Abhishek Singh and others.

“When I grew up, almost every child of Indian origin learned the legends and mythologies of India through comic books,” said Virgin Comics CEO & Publisher, Sharad Devarajan. “Working with an author of Deepak Chopras caliber allows us to recreate a series of Indian mythology comics crafted with the highest level of quality in artwork and story, bringing these cherished legends of India to audiences worldwide.”

“I grew up in Boston Massachusetts and worshiped the Red Sox and Patriots and felt bad about myself because kids teased me about believing in blue Gods with six arms. So what do I know about being authentic to India? I know I get to oversee a wildly talented group of young creators eager to tell their authentic myths to the world and it’s exciting. And as they say, blue is the new black,” commented Gotham Chopra, Virgin Comics Chief Creative Officer.

The first issue in the series has been just released in North America with a monthly cover price of US$2.99, with a Rs.15 Indian edition following later this year. The series will also be translated into numerous languages throughout Europe and Asia later this year. The first issue in the series can be viewed in its entirety as a digital comic on Virgin Comics website at: www.virgincomics.com/slideshow_ganesha.asp

This was in fact the first script I ever wrote for Virgin Comics. So it is pretty special for me. As usual do send me the comments and crits (also if you run across any reviews, news items and such on the www) via the contact me link on this site OR post comments on this one.

Since I am too lazy to start another topic I am using this space to also publish this bit of news. :D

DRAGONSLAYER online at ComicSpace galleries

In other news, I uploaded my first ever published piece
DRAGONSLAYER in full (all seven pages) to my ComicSpace gallery. Check it out here

I don’t know why but DRAGONSLAYER always reminded me of KALI. The story of DRAGONSLAYER is about a battered wife who endures brutal spousal rape and creates a fictional reality to escape from her tragic reality. It was published in VAULT OF TERROR from OPEN BOOK PRESS in JUN 2006.
