Damn! This $shit is addictive. I’m trolling on GreatBong’s site posting as Jimmy Zhingchak. Basically I’m just copying pasting from Rediff.net postings on the review of Three Idiots that GB has put up pretending to be someone who speaks exclusively in SMS-es (“Lyf lyk gud” and all that).
Man, people do take the anonymity of the web way too seriously. The comments started as snide and gradually decayed into plain old assault and battery. I’ll just keep at it till I get bored.
Maybe there’s a column in this somewhere
[UPDATE: Obviously, I’m doing this with GB’s knowledge and with a fail-safe button he can press for me to stop anytime he wants.]
[UPDATE2: (11:44 EST) – now the abuses have turned personal and really bite-y. ]
[UPDATE-3 (11:49 EST) — now trying a direct confrontation route ]
[UPDATE – 4 (11:53 EST) — okay, now I’m officially bored. The funny thing was this post showed up as a trackback/ping on the thread I was trolling and every post I had made was linked back to this website. Still, I guess cyber cojones give steroid rampage level meanness to people (especially with all the anonymity). Halting social experiment. Will proceed if there are any other responses.
My favorite part was posting a completely out of context Sachin Tendulkar career stat
So the interactive part of this experiment ends here. Thanks GB for being such a sport and allowing me to post/troll on that thread
Now I’m pretty sure, there’ll be responses to my earlier trolling posts even after I explained that I was trolling in this post.
Ha! saw this during a wikipedia browsing session. Kinda made my day! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Zhingchak_(comics).
JZ was a real blast to write. I have fond memories of writing it. The character of Bhappi-da, the last of the DISCO gods is hands down my favorite ever, closely followed by Fukku Bhai from Mumbai Macguffin. Last I heard (from semi-realiable sources) UTV was making a movie out of it. Wonders of work-for-hire! I’m not involved in that. But will go watch the movie when (and if) it gets made.
Oh! and I used to maintain a kind of scrapbook of Zhingchak sightings on the wild wild web. You can find it here.
About Jimmy Zhingchak
JIMMY ZHINGCHAK – AGENT OF D.I.S.C.O., written by Saurav Mohapatra and drawn by Anupam Sinha, is a spoof and a homage of ’80s bollywood disco zeitgeist, detailing the adventures of a disco dancing superspy who fights Sir John and his evil F.I.R.A.N.G. for the Dept. of Internal Security and Covert Operations (D.I.S.C.O.) As per fellow IIT KGP alumnus Pankaj Sethi, who pointed me to : http://seattle.aidindia.org/chakraview
More zhingchak… this time from CNN/IBN.
Here is the Video Link on AOL video.
Excerpt from the article
Bring out the bell bottoms, pump up the disco music and prepare for a blast from the past – Jimmy Zhingchak-Agent of Disco is the latest superhero to dance his way into a graphic novel by UTV Spotboy and Virgin Comics.
Filmy clichés abound in this tongue-in-cheek comic series that has Jimmy right out of a 80’s Bollywood masala flick.
So you have the quintessential villain Sir John, the old mother a la Nirupa Roy and then you have the dialogues that defined Bollywood in the 70’s and the 80’s. And best of all, Jimmy’s weapons of choice are his disco moves, just like a certain Mithun Chakraborty who has written the foreword.
Now, I ain’t one to crib (much), but would be nice to have an itty bitty mention somewhere in all this deluge of Zhingchak Euphoria.
Well looks like lotsa folks are writing about Jimmy Z, but they have typo’d the title as “Jimmy Zhinchak” instead of Jimmy zhingchak. Who cares… a rose by any other name… blah blah…
but wait… google does differentiate… so here goes google foot print of Jimmy Zhingchak/Zhinchak
For those who googled for zhinchak … Here are some links you’ve missed
May the Zhingchak be with you!
PS: Really feels good to have created something that so many people are njoying. As Jimmy zhinchak / jimmy zhingchak – agent of DISCO would say… “Aieee Saalaaa”.
No, not the one that wants to phone home, but Economic Times, one of India’s leading business daily’s has been swept up in the Zhingchak fever.
Here is the link
Now The Telegraph has done their bit in unleashing the Zhingchak. Here is the link to the piece in their Limelight section.
Well it’s finally here, Jimmy Zhingchak – Agent of D.I.S.C.O. is now out in comic book stores across the US and also available for purchase at Virgin Comics Store
And the initial reaction has been great
Raja Sen of Rediff.com did a “First Look” review.
In the blogopshere, reviews have started popping up and in general the comic seems to have been received in the right spirit (I’ve always maintained its equal parts homage and spoof, I simply can’t stress enough, how much my fragile little mind was warped by the Electric Bugaloo of 80’s Bollywood.)
Here is a brief list of reviews (I shall update the post as I find more)

they misspelt my name as “Sorav”
Okay, first of all personal updates:
On Feb 6th my daughter Adya was born and last couple weeks have been spent in adapting to fatherhood and perfecting premeptive diaper change techniques.
On the work front things have been slow. Apart from my regular monthlies DEVI and INDIA AUTHENTIC, there are three one-shots that I’m working on with Virgin Comics all coming out first half this year. As of now one of them has been solicited for an April 2008 release and for now that’s the only one I can talk about
I am working with legendary Indian comic book artist Anupam Sinha, creator of Super Commando Dhruva for a project titled JIMMY ZHINGCHAK : AGENT OF D.I.S.C.O.
Below are the details for the book
|JIMMY ZHINGCHAK : AGENT OF D.I.S.C.O.
Grab your white polyester bell-bottom jumpsuit, slap on your platform shoes and switch on the disco ball! Virgin Comics is going to take you on a trip in the wayback machine into the la la land of ’80s Bollywood! When Truth, Justice and the Indian Way is threatened by the vile designs of an evil “phoren” megalomaniac sulking in his island fortress with a perverse fondness for Cabaret, Cuban cigars with Martinis, and a hatred for all things DISCO, the fate of the world – Nay! The fate of the entire civilized universe! – rests on the shoulders of young disco-dancing super agent, Jimmy Zhingchak. Armed with a license to thrill, will Jimmy boogie on into the sunset or will he stumble and crumble against Sir John Firang’s evil machinations?Be prepared to be dazzled with glitter, glamor, cliches and of course bad hairdos or as Jimmy would put it “Aieeee Saala.“
The project is a full timepass spoof and homage to the 80’s bollywood DISCO zeitgeist made so popular by iconic figures like Mithun chakraborty and Bhappi Lahiri. I promise you it’s funny as hell too with cliches and plot holes galore.
so Aieee Saalaaaa wait up for Jimmy Z boggeying on your way.
