While attending NYCC ’08, I was approached by Luis Medina, a filmmaker who was making a documentary about [sic] “People of color in comics”. While I made my views clear on that “classification” (the only part that made it into the final cut is at 02:06 on the video), it was kind of interesting to discuss about the role of race/ethinicty in the kind of stories we tell.
I stand by the views I expressed in the documentary i.e. a writer is not defined as an Indian writer or a latin american writer or a caucasian writer. There are good writers and then there are bad writers.
Well, finally it’s out. This weekend at NYCC I got my copy of SADHU : THE SILENT ONES Trade Paperback collecting issues 1-5 of the miniseries I wrote. TSO continues the story of James Jensen, the british soldier who became a mystic and walked the path of the Sadhu as he searches for his son. He faces off with an ancient evil cult lead by a beautiful but deadly witch, The Grand Mistress of the Silent Ones. His quest takes him far beyond the limits of the mortal world as he pierces the boundaries between the physical world and the more esoteric planes of existence and discovers the true nature of reality.
Sadhu : TSO was fun to write as I got to play around with a lot of existential concepts. The cosmology of TSO tries to combine the Indian mystical concepts of Maya and Reincarnation along with the Australian Aboriginal concept of Dreamtime, reality as a set of interlocked / intersecting dreams of the collective unconscious.
You can either pick up the book at your nearby bookstore (which carries Virgin Comics) or buy it from Amazon here.

DEVI #14 also comes out that day … Just one more issue left in the KARMAGEDDON arc after this and from what i have seen of the #15 thumbnails so far, it rocks big time. lot of stuff getting blown up and DEVI is going to change forever.
If you don;t believe me take a look at the cover image and draw your own conclusions. (Cover is by Luke Ross (SAMURAI : HEAVEN & EARTH). Click on the image for a hires version.
so go buy the books and help feed the oompa loompas that live in my keyboard and write my stories :D.
Whew! Just mailed in scripts of INDIA AUTHENTIC #7:YAMA, SADHU: THE SILENT ONES #3 and DEVI #15 (The arc finale).
Like the way SADHU:TSO #3 shaped up, most existential piece I’ve ever written (mostly deals with nature of reality, dreams as an expression of an ultimate reality and touches on the concept of the collective unconscious expressed via Dreamtime).
DEVI #15 wraps up the Karmageddon arc and all I can say is that (Russel Peters don’t sue me) “SOMEBODY GONNA GET A HURT”. As my editor Ron Marz puts it we’ve “amped up” the action to the Nth as Tara Mehta, the girl who became a goddess finally snaps under the straing of carrying a divine essence inside her mind and a much darker entity is spawned. BTW… look out for DEVI #14 later this month.
INDIA AUTHENTIC #7 that i just sent in tells the story of YAMA – the god of death. It was a kicker to write for Yama is one the cooler deities around what with him being the guide of every soul into afterlife.
All of them hit the stands within the next couple of weeks or so. So go buy my stuff… me hungee and now i got to think of a baby girl to feed by FEB (yeah! we got official word from the doc that it’s a girl)…
The new SADHU miniseries “The Silent Ones” hit the stores last Wednesday (8th Aug). It picks up from where SADHU #8 left off and begins with James at the Kumbh Mela coming face to face with an evil cult of Demon Sadhus. It takes James Jensen, the British soldier in 19th century india who became a Sadhu deeper and deeper into the mystical landscape of India.
The series is written by your truly, has art by artist Manikandan and is edited by Ron Marz. the cover is by Brian Stelfreeze.
Even if I say so myself, the art looks gorgeous. As has become a sort of a ritual for me, I drove down to my LCS That’s Entertainment in Worcester (http://www.thatse.com) and bought a copy. The art on the printed page looks even better than the digital previews I had seen from the studio. Just flip through it and I think you’ll love the linework and the colors.
Look out especially for the two page spreads (one at the beginning showing the Kumbh Mela and one in the middle showing the fight scene between James and the cult).
